Tholen was educated at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He was taught by Paul Joseph Constantin Gabril, among others, whose work had a great influence on his style. After his education, Tholen settled as a drawing teacher in Gouda and then in Kampen. Nature was a great source of inspiration for him.
